A Response to the Massapequa Post Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

I would like to respond to an editorial letter that was published in your newspaper this past week. It was written by Delores Genovese. The Massapequa Mustangs are a youth football organization run exclusively by volunteers. Many of these volunteers are members of the NYFD and NYPD. Furthermore, many of these same volunteers were first responders to the tragedy that occurred on 9/11/01.  Many of us lost friends and family that day. People have a right in this country to grieve and remember in their own way.  To cast your own personal aspersion on our program is your right also. I do not know where your malice for our program comes from but I am compelled to state a few facts to you.

Our program is a pillar of the community and has been since 1958. We spend a great deal of time outside of football to teach our cheerleaders and football players to give back to the community. Before you write an acerbic letter to the editor of the Massapequa Post, I suggest you research what the Massapequa Mustangs are all about. Contact St. William the Abbot, St Rose of Lima, Massapequa Yes Center, Massapequa Moms, Nassau County Veterans Association and the many individual families we have assisted in our community that have suffered hardships. Ask the MHS sports programs about the donations we have sent to the high school for equipment. As a member of the MHS Hall of Fame, look into donations we have made. You may also look at the records on who made donations for the memorial site at the front of Burns Park where you chose to be on 9/11/16.

You stated in your editorial letter that we so callously “played football and cheered while this solemn ceremony was going on”. You failed to mention in your editorial letter that at no point did anyone, including you, EVER advise the Massapequa Mustangs the time the ceremony was.  If you had, we would have had representation there and adjusted our game schedule to coincide with the ceremony.

Also, in your letter, you ask, “what were the coaches thinking”?  “What message were they sending to our young people”? I can answer that directly because I was one of the coaches on the field. During the National Anthem and the Moment of Silence we observed prior to the game, this is what I was thinking

I was praying for peace for the families who lost loved ones on 9/11

I was praying for men and women who perished on 9/11 to be at peace

I was thankful for our military

I was thankful for the men and women who were responders and survived

I prayed that our children never have to experience another 9/11

I enjoyed coaching and listing to the sound of the cheerleaders and players having fun and moving forward in life despite the world we live in.

The message that I am sending to the young people is NEVER FORGET. We are still free and still here!

CHICAGO BEARS SIGN DARREL YOUNG

Former Mustang and Washington Redskin Darrel Young was added to the Chicago Bears roster. "The team announced that they have signed former Redskin Darrel Young, who took part in the team’s June minicamp on a tryout basis. Rookie fullback Joe Sommers was waived in a corresponding move. Young spent the last six years with Washington and played in every game over the last two seasons. He ran the ball 51 times for 185 yards and seven touchdowns while also catching 45 passes and six more touchdowns. His playing time slipped in 2015, however, leaving Young to look elsewhere for playing time during the 2016 season."

Bruce Arians: People that wouldn't let their sons play football are fools

Before we go any further, let's agree on this: football is the greatest sport invented by man. There is simply nothing like it on earth - or at least there's nothing like it accessible to your typical American adolescent. Surely this is a positioning statement we can all agree with, yes?...

3 Reasons Why Your Child Should Play Youth Football

A few years ago, my son's football team was handing out game jerseys during training camp. Our program orders the jerseys in advance in assorted sizes with numbers already on them. Once they're given out, the last names are added to them.

Bradley looked at the jerseys in his size and settled on No. 3. A short time later, another child picked out his jersey. I don't remember exactly what number it was, but let's just say it was 65. One of his parents was overheard saying something to the effect of:

Redskins fullback Darrel Young is team's nomination for Byron "Whizzer" White Award

The NFLPA announced today that Redskins fullback Darrel Young is the team's nomination for the Byron "Whizzer" White Award. The award, the highest honor presented by the Players Association, recognizes players who go above and beyond to perform community service in their team cities and hometowns.

Its title acknowledges Supreme Court Justice Byron Raymond "Whizzer" White, a scholar, athlete, patriot, humanitarian and public servant. In his spirit, the NFLPA presents the award to the player that's just as dedicated off the field as he is on the field.

Five finalists will be pooled down from each team's candidate in January, with the winner, announced at the Super Bowl press conference, receiving $100,000 dollars for his foundation or charity of his choice. Ken Houston, in 1981, was the last Redskin to win the award.

Players had the opportunity to nominate the candidate from their team when the NFLPA visited locker rooms this fall.

Thus far in 2015, Young leads all teammates by attending 29 community events, which take place all around the DMV area. He was voted last year as the Redskins' "Community Man of the Year" after he attended 34 events in 2014.
